Citizen history · est. on the side of the road
The plaques, cairns and curiosities of an enormous country.
Australia is dotted with an estimated 40,000 historical markers and almost no one has bothered to write them down. We're trying to fix that — one weather-beaten plaque at a time.
Acknowledgement of Country
"We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands across Australia and pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We recognise their continued connection to land, waters and culture and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded."
State research
Eight reports — one for each state and territory — on what their markers reveal (and quietly omit).
Spotted a marker we've missed?
Pull over (safely), snap a photo, jot down the inscription and submit it. A volunteer will check it and add it to the register. That's how this thing grows.
