What is a historical marker?

Pull off the highway anywhere in Australia and you'll likely find one within a kilometre — a bronze plaque on a sandstone block, a weather-beaten cairn, an honour roll bolted to a hall, or a council interpretive sign explaining why the paddock you're standing next to is, in fact, of considerable significance.

There are an estimated 40,000 of them across the continent. No one has ever properly catalogued them all. We thought we'd have a crack.

Our mission

To act as a respectful, community-built repository of historical marker information — promoting an inclusive and balanced narrative that includes all aspects of Australian history, not just the bits commemorated in bronze.
