Cultural safety

This site catalogues markers that already exist in public places. Many of them tell colonial stories. Some neglect — or actively misrepresent — the histories of First Australians, on whose Country every one of these markers stands.

What we try to do

  • Acknowledge Country prominently on every page.
  • Flag markers with First Nations significance and, where we know it, name the Traditional Owners of the land they sit on.
  • Avoid publishing details of culturally sensitive sites without community consent.
  • Welcome corrections and additional context from First Nations communities.

Concerns about a marker?

If a marker on this site causes harm, misrepresents events, or includes culturally sensitive material that should not be public, please use the report function on the marker's page or get in touch directly. We will review and act promptly.

This is a side project run by volunteers. We will get things wrong. We're committed to fixing them when we do.
